CRARR CO-HOSTED BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENT WITH GRENADA SENATOR PEMBA BRAVEBOY


Montreal, February 25, 2010 --- To celebrate Black History Month 2010, CRARR co-hosted a Lecture featuring Grenada Senator Pemba Braveboy, on February 18th, 2010,as part of Black History Month events and the opening session of the national conference of Black Law Students Association of Canada.

Following a panel discussion entitled “Do Bullets See Color? Race, Police and Justice in Montreal's, which involves the case of Ms. Gemma Raeburn and her two Black friends, Dr. Braveboy addressed issues of youth and empowerment for racial equality,the Moot Court of the McGill Law Faculty. Her lecture drew an enthusiastic response from some 100 participants and guests, including Chief Justice Adrian Saunders of the Caribbean Court of Justice. Jamaica's Honorary Consul Vonnie Rochester acted as MC of the evening.

At 30, Senator Pemba Braveboy, who hails from St. Patrick's, Grenada, is a medical Doctor with a private practice at Sea Island Medical Clinic in St. George's, Grenada. Considered a rising star in Grenada and the Caribbean political world, she is also the President of the Democratic Youth Council of her political party (which now forms the Government of Grenada), Secretary of the Grenada Medical Association, Vice-Chair of the Grenada-China Friendship Association and Host of the Youth Radio Programme “Who's In the Building.”

On Friday, February 19, 2010,Senator Braveboy attended the signing of the Golden Book (for distinguished visitors) at City Hall, bringing official greetings from the Prime Minister of Grenada, Hon. Tillman Thomas. Representing the City of Montreal was Executive Committee Member Mary Deros. The Consul General of Grenada for Montreal, Mr. Leonard Wharwood and the Honorary Consul of Barbados for Montreal Dr. Myrna Lashley, were also present.

Senator Braveboy's Lecture is part of the Global Dialogue on Diversity, an initiative by the Institute for Research and Education on Race Relations (IRERR). The IRERR Global Dialogue on Diversity is designed to foster public awareness of and openness to diversity and equality through dialogue with key actors and thinkers around the world.
