ATTACKS AGAINST MONTREAL JEWISH INSTITUTIONS: DESPICABLE ACTS OF HATE THAT MUST BE PROSECUTED

Montreal, January 17, 2011 --- Yesterday’s attacks on Jewish institutions in Montreal are an alarming reminder that Montrealers of all backgrounds must always be vigilant against this kind of despicable acts of hate.

These acts, which were directed at three synagogues, a daycare and a school, are not only an attack on the Jewish community, but on all Montrealers because they stand contrary to our national fundamental values of equality, diversity and liberty. In 2011, people of good faith and will everywhere, regardless of religion, race and ethnicity, have the right not to be faced with this kind of baseless intolerance.

No one can and should remain indifferent to this violent form of anti-semitism and civil rights violations. Our pluralistic democracy suffers when they occur, because they threaten peace and social cohesion.

CRARR joins Jewish and other civic leaders in calling on the police and other authorities to seek out and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law, the author(s) of these acts.

CRARR also urges all Montrealers to work together to achieve full acceptance of diversity and to support civil rights.
