MARGUERITE-BOURGEOYS SCHOOL BOARD IN COURT FOR ANOTHER CASE OF ETHNIC DISCRIMINATION

Montreal, August 20, 2010 --- The Marguerite-Bourgeoys School Board will appear once again today before the Quebec Human Rights Tribunal in another case of ethnic discrimination in education (class reassignment and harassment), in which an Hispanic-Iranian youth was awarded $20,000 by the human rights commission.

The first hearing will take place today at 9:30 am, at the Montreal Courthouse (Palais de Justice), in Room 13.03; the School Board has introduced a motion to clarify CRARR's status (CRARR helped bring the case to the commission back in 2005).

The second hearing will take place on September 8, at the same venue. This hearing will examine the School Board's motion to have the case dismissed due to the human rights commission's excessive delay in investigating the case.

Me Aymar Missakila will represent CRARR at both hearings. The human rights commission will also be represented by counsel.

The School Board has recently been ordered by the Tribunal to pay $17,000 to Ms Maria Gallardo and her son Luc, for discrimination. It has filed for leave to appeal this decision before the Court of Appeal, which will hear its motion on September 2, 2010, at the same venue.
