MEDIA ADVISORY: CRARR TO RELEASE FINDINGS ON SYSTEMIC RACE PROBLEMS WITH QUEBEC HUMAN RIGHTS SYSTEM AT BLACK COMMUNITY FORUM

Montreal, June 15, 2016 — At a day-long forum on the Black community hosted by the Black Community Resources Center to take place tomorrow, CRARR will present its preliminary findings on systemic problems with the handling of complaints of racial discrimination by the Quebec Human Rights and Youth Rights Commission, especially where English-speaking Black victims are concerned.

The Forum will take place on June 16, 2016, at 10:00 AM, at the Black Community Resource Center, 6767 Côte-des-Neiges, Montréal.

CRARR's findings will be released at the panel discussion on civil rights and racism, entitled “Do Black Lives Matter”, starting at 1:30 pm. These findings will then be open for discussion by other panelists and participants from different Black community groups.

CRARR’s findings address problems related to mishandling of race complaints, especially those filed by English-speaking Black and racialized victims, including incomplete investigation, errors of law and inexplicable delays in investigating complaints and in decision-making.

The presentation will also address racial under-representation among commissioners and senior staff at the Commission.
