POLICE ETHICS TRIBUNAL REVERSES COMMISSIONER'S DECISION TO DISMISS LAVAL DRIVING-WHILE-BLACK COMPLAINT

Montreal, January 20, 2012 --- The Police Ethics Committee has reversed the Police Ethics Commissioner's decision to dismiss a Laval Black lawyer's complaint against two police officers for racial profiling, and ordered the Commissioner to cite the officers before it for race-based misconduct and unjustified interception of the man.

The application to the Committee (a specialized administrative tribunal) to review the Commissioner's decision was filed last October by the lawyer, with CRARR's assistance. The appeal is based on the fact that the Commissioner committed numerous errors in fact and in law, especially where the legal interpretation of racial profiling is concerned, which led to the incorrect analysis of the lawyer's complaint and the unfair rejection of his complaint.
